River Rock for Georgia Beds, Splash Areas and Dry Creeks
Georgia red clay can hold surface water near planted spaces. River Rock gives those visible areas naturally rounded cover while leaving paths for drainage.

The decision in most Georgia yards is whether the strip that keeps washing out gets another load of mulch next spring or gets covered once in stone and left alone. Red clay sheds a summer downpour fast, and the bare ground along a runoff line is where mulch always ends up in the lawn. River rock is the material that stays. It is smooth, naturally rounded stone from 1 inch to 3 inches, in tans, grays and browns with the occasional red.
Why a load looks different wet than it does dry
The color is mixed by nature rather than sorted, so a load reads as a blend rather than a single tone, and it changes with the weather. Dry stone in July sun looks pale and dusty. The same bed after a thunderstorm goes deep and saturated, with the reds and browns coming forward. Anyone choosing stone from a photograph should expect both looks.
The size range matters more than the color for how the bed behaves. At the 1 inch end the stone knits together and stays reasonably stable underfoot. At the 3 inch end it reads as cobble, holds bigger gaps and moves more easily when something disturbs it. A load contains both, which is what gives a finished bed its texture.
The faces are the other thing to understand. These stones are water-worn and rounded, not crushed, so they roll against each other instead of locking. That is exactly why they suit a bed and exactly why they behave badly on a slope without an edge.
Which river rock job this is: splash strip, wall backfill or pond edge
A downspout splash area is the smallest and most common. Water leaving a downspout at speed digs a hole in clay within a season, and a shallow bed of rounded stone spreads that impact while letting the water through to the ground.
A pond or shoreline edge is a larger version of the same idea, defining the line between planted ground and water while taking the wear where the level rises and falls. Dry creek beds follow the route runoff already takes across a yard, so the water has a defined channel instead of cutting a new one each storm.
Retaining wall backfill is the job people ask about that this stone should not do. A wall needs a drainage column of angular stone that locks together and holds voids under load, which is #57 Granite, not rounded cobble. River rock can finish the visible toe at the base of the wall once the working backfill is in, and that is a genuinely good use of it.
How rounded stone sits on clay that sheds water fast
Red clay does not let water soak away, so a stone bed laid straight onto it becomes a shallow reservoir with rock floating on top. Fines wash up between the stones from below, the bed goes muddy within two seasons and it never looks right again.
The fix is what goes underneath. Strip the turf, shape the ground so water has somewhere to go, and lay geotextile fabric before any stone lands. The fabric keeps clay and stone apart and slows weeds, though nothing stops weeds entirely once leaf litter has built up in the gaps.
On a slope the other consideration is speed. Georgia storms can drop several inches quickly, and water moving under a bed at that rate will undercut it at the low end. Give the run an outlet it can leave through, rather than a dead end.
Edging and depth that keep stone out of the mower's path
Depth is a balance. Too shallow and the fabric shows through and weeds come up at the edges. Too deep and you are walking on ball bearings, the stone rolls when someone steps on it and the surplus finds its way to the lawn. A cover deep enough to hide what is underneath, with the larger pieces seated rather than perched, is the target.
Edging is what actually keeps stone in place. A bed that runs flush to grass will feed the mower every summer, and a stone through a blade is an expensive afternoon. Steel, stone or a cut trench edge all work, as long as the top of the stone finishes below the top of the edge.
On a slope, set the larger pieces at the low end first and work up, so they hold the smaller ones behind them.
Yardage for two splash strips, a wall toe and a pond edge
Hypothetical examples, with the arithmetic shown so you can substitute your own dimensions.
Two downspout splash strips, each 4 feet by 6 feet at 3 inches: one strip is 4 x 6 x (3 / 12) = 6 cubic feet, so the pair is 12 cubic feet, and 12 / 27 = 0.44 cubic yards. Half a yard does both.
A visible toe along 30 feet of wall at 1 foot wide and 4 inches deep: 30 x 1 x (4 / 12) = 10 cubic feet, and 10 / 27 = 0.37 cubic yards. Under half a yard, with the drainage column behind the wall ordered separately as angular stone.
A pond edge 40 feet long and 3 feet wide at 4 inches: 40 x 3 x (4 / 12) = 40 cubic feet, and 40 / 27 = 1.48 cubic yards. Order one and a half.
All loose volumes. This site's calculator pages put 1 to 3 inch river rock at roughly 2,700 lb per cubic yard, about 1.35 tons per yard, and on that approximate figure the pair of splash strips is 0.44 x 1.35 = about 0.6 tons, the wall toe 0.37 x 1.35 = about 0.5 tons, and the pond edge 1.48 x 1.35 = about 2 tons. Take your own measurements to the River Rock Calculator to check them.
Counting the beds and clearing a spot for the pile
Measure each bed separately and add them rather than estimating a total, because rounded stone is heavy and an over-order sits in the corner of the yard for years.
Then think about where the pile lands. A firm drop spot on the drive beats one on the lawn, since a loaded truck on wet red clay leaves ruts. A tarp under the pile keeps the surface clean and makes wheelbarrowing quicker. Clear the route between the pile and the beds before the day, because moving stone twice is the thing that turns a weekend job into two.
