Most driveway gravel around here gets ordered in the same circumstances. A drive that looked fine in September comes out of a wet Georgia winter with ruts down both wheel tracks and one soft patch that never quite dries. A fresh load puts the surface back and gives rain a route off the traveled strip instead of into it. What the load cannot do on its own is fix the red clay underneath, and knowing which of those two problems you have is the difference between a drive that holds for years and one you top up every spring.

Three quarter inch, graded, and why the mix matters more than the top size

The stone sold here as Driveway Gravel runs to a 3/4 inch top size, in a graded mix of stone sizes rather than one uniform piece, and it is crushed rather than rounded.

Each of those three things does a job. The 3/4 inch top size is large enough to carry a car and small enough to rake flat without a machine. The graded mix means smaller pieces sit down into the voids between the larger ones, so the layer bridges rather than rolls. The crushed faces are the part people overlook: angular fragments key into each other under tire weight, while a rounded stone of the same size shifts sideways and ends up on the lawn.

That is also the honest limit of this material. It is a surface course. It drains far better than a sealed drive, but it is not a drainage layer and it is not a structural base.

What a wet week does under driveway gravel on red clay

Piedmont clay behaves in two ways depending on how much water is already in it. Dry, it is close to rock. Saturated, after a long wet spell or the back edge of a tropical storm, it turns greasy and loses most of its strength.

Stone laid on clay in that second state does not sit on top of it. Tires push the pieces down into the softened surface, clay squeezes up between them, and within a season the load you bought has effectively disappeared. That is why a drive can swallow tons of stone and still rut.

Frost is not what sets thickness in Georgia. Freezes are light across most of the state and the residential code sets a 12 inch minimum footing depth, so the real questions are how much water the ground is holding and how heavy the traffic is.

Depth on ground that is firm, and depth where the clay pumps

On ground that stays firm through a wet week, a surface course over an existing compacted drive is a modest layer, spread and rolled. On a drive being rebuilt, the surface stone goes over a compacted base of GAB (Graded Aggregate Base) or Crusher Run, never straight onto the subgrade.

Where the ground pumps water as you step on it, more surface stone is the wrong answer. Cut the soft material out, put a coarse open stone such as #4 Crushed Stone in the bottom, lay geotextile fabric over it, then build back up. Work in lifts of a few inches and compact each one, because a thick layer dumped in a single pass locks up at the top and stays loose below.

Give the finished drive some fall. A crown of a couple of inches across the width sends a summer downpour to the shoulders rather than letting it run the length of the tracks and cut them deeper.

Downspout splash strips, wall backfill and pond edges

Three jobs come up often enough on Georgia properties to be worth separating out, because this stone suits one of them and not the other two.

A splash strip under a downspout is a reasonable fit. The graded mix stays put better than a rounded stone under falling water, and the fines that wash out of it are replaceable. Set an edge so the strip keeps its shape.

Backfill behind a retaining wall is not a fit. The drainage chimney behind a wall has to stay open so water reaches the weep holes, and the fines in a graded surface mix pack into exactly the voids you need. That zone wants clean washed stone, which is #57 Granite.

A pond or shoreline edge splits in two. The bank at the waterline, where storm runoff arrives and water works back and forth, is armor stone work and belongs to RipRap. The access apron above the bank, where a truck or a mower turns, is fair ground for a graded drive stone.

Three hypothetical loads, measured and converted

These are worked examples, not projects. Substitute your own dimensions and the arithmetic runs the same way. The calculator pages on this site put driveway gravel at roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard, which is about 1.40 tons per yard, and that approximate figure is what the conversions below use.

A downspout splash strip 12 feet long and 3 feet wide at 4 inches: 12 x 3 = 36 square feet, 36 x (4 / 12) = 12 cubic feet, and 12 / 27 = 0.44 cubic yards. At 1.40 tons per yard that is 0.62 tons, so a single ton covers it with spare.

A drainage chimney behind a 40 foot wall, 1 foot wide and 2 feet deep: 40 x 1 x 2 = 80 cubic feet, and 80 / 27 = 2.96 cubic yards. Round to 3 yards, which works out near 4.2 tons of washed stone rather than this material.

A pond access apron 50 feet by 5 feet at 3 inches: 50 x 5 = 250 square feet, 250 x (3 / 12) = 62.5 cubic feet, and 62.5 / 27 = 2.31 cubic yards, or roughly 3.2 tons.

Clearing the drop spot before the truck turns in

Every figure above is loose volume. Compaction takes a little out of it, and an old drive with hollows in it takes more than the tape suggests, so ordering slightly long is sensible on a resurfacing job.

Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the driver needs clear access to the spot where the pile will land. Move vehicles and trailers, look up at where a limb hangs over the route, and mark the drop point with something visible from the cab. Then check your numbers in the Gravel Calculator, pick a tonnage and a delivery date on this page, and raise anything awkward about the access through Contact before the day rather than on it.
