Walkway Gravel for Georgia Garden Paths on Red Clay
Putting Walkway Gravel straight over wet red clay can leave a path uneven. In Georgia, use it on a prepared garden route that needs drainage and a clean finish.

The real choice on a Georgia garden path is rarely gravel or no gravel. It is whether the route gets a shaped, compacted foundation underneath it, or goes straight onto clay that will be soft again by the next thunderstorm and rutted by the end of the season. Walkway gravel is 3/8 inch crushed stone, a graded mix of sizes, and the graded part is why it settles into a walkable surface instead of scattering. What it cannot do is make bad ground behave.
Walkway gravel next to #89 stone, screenings and pea gravel
Four small materials on this site look similar in a photograph and behave differently underfoot.
#89 Crushed Stone is the angular small stone used for paths, paver joints and tight bedding. It is close enough to this product that on some jobs either will do, with the graded mix here giving a slightly more settled walking surface.
Screenings are finer again, mostly granite dust with small stone in it, and they pack down to a firm surface that sheds water rather than letting it through. On a Georgia path that can be a plus or a problem depending on whether you want drainage.
3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is the rounded alternative. It feels better barefoot and looks softer, but rounded pieces roll rather than knit, so a pea gravel path needs firmer edging and more topping up.
Walkway gravel sits in the middle: angular enough to settle and stay, fine enough to walk on comfortably in shoes.
Paths, stepping stone joints and the strip along a raised bed
A garden path linking parts of a yard is the core job, particularly on a route that curves and would be awkward to pave. Front and side yard walks are the same job in a straighter line.
Between flagstone or concrete steppers, this gravel fills the gaps, supports the edges of the stones so they do not rock, and keeps mud and weeds out of the joints. That is where it earns its place on clay ground, because bare joints between steppers turn to mud strips after a storm.
The strip around a raised vegetable bed is the third common use. Bed paths take wheelbarrow traffic, get wet, and turn to slick red mud when they are left as bare ground. A gravel surface over a prepared route keeps them usable through a wet spring.
A playground surface is the job this material is wrong for. Angular 3/8 inch stone is sharp under a fall and unpleasant on bare feet, so a play area wants Mason Sand or a rounded gravel instead.
How deep 3/8 inch crushed stone goes over a prepared route
Two layers, not one. Excavate the route, shape it so water runs off rather than along it, and compact a base layer of Crusher Run into the bottom. Landscape fabric over that compacted foundation slows weeds and stops clay working up into the gravel. Then the surfacing gravel over the top.
The surface course wants to be thick enough to cover the fabric completely and thin enough that you are not wading through it. Deep loose gravel on a footpath is tiring to walk on and endlessly migrates to the edges.
Depth here is a drainage question rather than a frost question. Freezes are light across most of the state and the residential code sets a 12 inch minimum footing depth, so what governs the build is how wet the clay underneath gets and how quickly the path sheds a summer downpour.
Edging holds the whole thing together. A path with no edge loses gravel into the beds and the lawn every time it rains hard.
Fall across the path matters more than most people expect. A route shaped to shed sideways stays intact, while a route that dishes slightly in the middle turns into a small stream during a summer storm and scours a channel down its length. Crown the surface very slightly, or tip the whole width toward a bed that can take the water, and check it after the first heavy rain rather than assuming it worked.
Timing is worth a thought too. The easiest windows are the dry runs in spring and early autumn, when the clay underneath will actually compact. Building a path on saturated ground after a long wet spell means the base never tightens, and the surface tells you so a season later.
Yardage for a curving flagstone run and a bed surround
Hypothetical examples, with the arithmetic shown so you can substitute your own measurements.
A flagstone walkway 3.5 feet wide and 55 feet long, with gravel filling around the steppers at 2 inches: 3.5 x 55 x (2 / 12) = 32.08 cubic feet, and 32.08 / 27 = 1.19 cubic yards. Order a yard and a quarter, which allows for what disappears into the joints.
Paths around four raised vegetable beds, totaling 210 square feet of route at 3 inches: 210 x (3 / 12) = 52.5 cubic feet, and 52.5 / 27 = 1.94 cubic yards. Round up to 2.
For a path that curves or changes width, measure the width at several points, average them, and multiply by the length walked along the center line. Break an awkward shape into rectangles and add the pieces. Both figures above are loose volume. This site's calculator pages put driveway and walkway gravel at roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard, about 1.40 tons per yard, and on that approximate figure the flagstone run is 1.19 x 1.40 = about 1.7 tons and the bed surround 1.94 x 1.40 = about 2.7 tons. Take the measurements to the Gravel Calculator to check them.
Once the number is settled, pick a quantity and a delivery date on this page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, covered on the delivery page, and the driver needs a clear spot to tip. Wheelbarrowing gravel through a house gate is slow, so if the only access to the back garden is narrow, flag it through Contact before you book a date.
